Book excerpt: Dedicated to the late Gerard Béhague (1937-2005), whose pioneering work in Latin American music, popular culture, and performance studies contributed extensively to ethnomusicological discourse in the 1970s-1990s, this anthology offers comparative perspectives on the evolving legacy of performance ethnography in socio-musical analysis. President of the Society for Ethnomusicology from 1979-81, editor of its journal, Ethnomusicology, from 1974-78, and founder and editor of the trilingual Latin American Music Review from 1980 until his death, Béhague also established the ethnomusicology graduate program at the University of Texas at Austin in 1974, thereby influencing the training and thinking of dozens of the field’s practitioners. Among these are the volume’s eight authors, whose contributions reflect the heritage but also contemporary trajectories of Béhague’s scholarly concerns. Prefaced by an essay outlining key developments in the ethnography of performance paradigm, the volume’s seven case studies portray snapshots of musical life in representative communities of the Americas, including the southwestern and Pacific United States, Puerto Rico, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, and Ecuador. Situated in milieus ranging from the indigenous festivals of the Andean highlands, to the competitive public gatherings of poet-singers in post-Pinochet Chile, to the Puerto Rican dance halls of the Hawaiian islands, these studies pose anthropological inquiries into the ontology of performance practice, the social power of poetic performativity, and the experience and embodiment of sound in place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of I’m Not Scared “beautifully evokes the lopsided streets of an Italian backwater . . . the shadow life of childhood” (The New Yorker). Italian literary superstar Niccolò Ammaniti’s novel, I’m Not Scared, prompted gushing praise, hit international bestseller lists, and was made into a smash indie film. In I’ll Steal You Away, Ammaniti takes his unparalleled empathy for children, his scythe-sharp observations, and his knack for building tension to a whole new level. In a tiny Italian village, a young boy named Pietro is growing up tormented by bullies and ignored by his parents. When an aging playboy, Graziano Biglia, returns to town, a change is in the air: Pietro decides to take on the bullies, his lonely teacher Flora finds romance with the town’s prodigal son, and the inept janitor at the school proclaims his love for his favorite prostitute. But the village isn’t ready for such change, and when Graziano seduces and forgets Flora, both she and Pietro’s tentative hopes seem crushed forever. With great tenderness, Ammaniti shines light on the heart-wrenching failures and quiet redemptions of ordinary people trying to live extraordinary lives. “Deliciously languorous . . . Ammaniti has a Dickensian touch for character study . . . I’ll Steal You Away will do just that.” —The New York Times Book Review “A snapshot of small-town Italian life that could be, just as easily, a tale of small-town American life . . . Ammaniti weaves almost seamlessly between his characters as they spiral slowly toward their inevitable sad conclusions. A-” —Entertainment Weekly “Chilling and intimate, Ammaniti’s work brings life to a deceptively quiet town and its wealth of eclectic and unsettling residents.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Book excerpt: The third Kathryn Dance novel from Number One bestseller Jeffery Deaver. Kayleigh Towne is a beautiful and successful singer-songwriter, and Edwin Sharp is her biggest fan. When she replies to one of his fan letters with 'XO', Edwin is convinced she loves him, and that her latest hit song 'Your Shadow' was written for him. Nothing Kayleigh or her lawyers can say persuades him otherwise. Then the singer gets an anonymous phone call; it's the first verse of 'Your Shadow' playing. Soon after, one of the crew is horribly murdered. Kayleigh's friend Kathryn Dance, a special agent with the California Bureau of Investigation, knows that stalking crimes are not one-off occurrences, and, sure enough, more verses of the song are played as warnings of death to follow. With a little help from forensic criminalist Lincolyn Rhyme, Dance must use her kinesic and investigative skills in an attempt to find the killer before more people die. Deaver has written the actual song, 'Your Shadow'. Readers will be able to download it from www.jefferydeaver.com.

When she prays to her goddess, Asherah, for help, Elijah, a prophet of Israel arrives at her door with bread, oil, and an allegiance to the god Yahweh. Willing to accept Elijah's help, but not his god or his vow of celibacy, Arishat follows him to Israel determined not only to win his love but also to convince him of his need for a goddess. However, as she becomes embroiled in Elijah's mission against the corrupt King Ahab, she soon discovers a cause of her own among Israelite women trying to keep goddess traditions alive against the opposition of their men. Arishat will soon have to choose between her love for a man who rejects the goddess, and her loyalty to her own beloved Asherah. Brimming over with vibrant period detail and peopled with characters who bring these ancient times to life, The Prophet's Woman is a wonderful story and a fresh, well-needed addition to the genre of biblical historical fiction.
