Book excerpt: Despite his fascination with snow and his ownership of a Norwegian ski resort, Gavin Harrison could not wait to emigrate from England with his brother Greg to Martinique to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle in paradise. On the outside, it appears he has an enviable life as an entrepreneur and co-owner of the familys sugarcane plantation business. But all is not as it seems. Privilege comes with a price. Still grieving for the loss of his beloved Susannah, who tragically died in a fire on his yacht nearly a year ago, Gavin isnt ready to engage with another woman carrying a torch for him. As he attempts to resume a normal life once again, Gavin begins to believe that someone is trying to kill him. Despite a plane crash, a kidnapping in the Norwegian mountains, and a murder, the people closest to Gavin still doubt his sanity. In this thriller packed with unexpected twists and turns, hidden forces of revenge orchestrate events against a wealthy man, leaving him to wonder if he is dealing with just an unexplained bout of paranoia or an uncertain but very real demise.

Book excerpt: Charming, romantic, and painted with gorgeous Regency detail, Karla Hocker’s romances will delight readers from the very first page. Lady Caroline Dundas may have been raised in New Orleans, but she knew how to comport herself as well as any London miss. But proper manners were quite impossible to maintain in the face of Simon Renshaw's arrogance. How dare he declare her father an impostor who had returned to England only to grab the family fortune and title. Renshaw was clearly a charlatan...and a rake as well! For he looked her up and down with an insulting familiarity that made her wish she were not such a lady after all. Simon Renshaw could not believe the raven-haired Lady Caroline was an innocent in the Dundas deception. She was too clever by half—and suspiciously protective of her scheming papa. Though she appeared to be nothing more than a cold-blooded adventuress, Simon could not help but wish himself in her clutches. Perhaps a stolen kiss or two might melt her deceitful heart...and yield up something even more precious than the truth.

Book Select Works Vol 1 French Enlightenment Series

Download or read Select Works Vol 1 French Enlightenment Series PDF, written by Bernard of Clairvoux and published by Lulu Press, Inc. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is hard to know how to characterize Bernard of Clairvaux. On the one hand, he is called the “honey-tongued doctor” for his eloquent writings on the love of God. On the other hand, he rallied soldiers to kill Muslims during the Crusades. He wrote eloquently on humility; then again, he loved being close to the seat of power and was an adviser to five popes. He is well regarded as the last of the Church Fathers & one of the great mystics. What Bernard is remembered for today, more than his reforming zeal and crusade preaching is his mystical writings. His best-known work is On Loving God, in which he states his purpose at the beginning: “You wish me to tell you why and how God should be loved. My answer is that God, Himself, is the reason he is to be loved.” What is clear is this: 400 years after his death, he was still widely quoted by Catholics and Protestants, both of whom claimed his support. John Calvin considered him the major witness to truth between Gregory the Great and the 1500s.

Book excerpt: SAINT BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX COLLECTION [8 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Bernard of Clairvaux, was a French abbot and the primary reformer for the Cistercian order. After the death of his mother, Bernard sought admission into the Cistercian order. "Three years later, he was sent to found a new abbey at an isolated clearing in a glen known as the Val d'Absinthe, about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) southeast of Bar-sur-Aube. According to tradition, Bernard founded the monastery on 25 June 1115, naming it Claire Vallée, which evolved into Clairvaux. There Bernard would preach an immediate faith, in which the intercessor was the Virgin Mary." In the year 1128, Bernard attended the Council of Troyes, at which he traced the outlines of the Rule of the Knights Templar, which soon became the ideal of Christian nobility. On the death of Pope Honorius II on 13 February 1130, a schism broke out in the Church. King Louis VI of France convened a national council of the French bishops at Étampes in 1130, and Bernard was chosen to judge between the rivals for pope. After the council of Étampes, Bernard spoke with King Henry I of England, also known as Henry Beauclerc, about Henry I's reservations regarding Pope Innocent II. Henry I was sceptical because most of the bishops of England supported Antipope Anacletus II; Bernard persuaded him to support Innocent. Germany had decided to support Innocent through Norbert of Xanten, who was a friend of Bernard's. However, Innocent insisted on Bernard's company when he met with Lothair II, Holy Roman Emperor. —BOOKS— CONCERNING GRACE AND FREE WILL LIFE AND WORKS OF SAINT BERNARD LIFE OF SAINT MALACHY OF ARMAGH ON CONSIDERATION ON THE LOVE OF GOD SERMONS OF SAINT BERNARD ON ADVENT & CHRISTMAS: INCLUDING THE FAMOUS TREATISE ON THE INCARNATION CALLED "MISSUS EST" SERMONS ON THE CANTICLE OF CANTICLES SOME LETTERS OF SAINT BERNARD PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

This book was released on 2021-06-14 with total page 1667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Watson was a 17th-century minister at the church of St. Stephen Walbrook in London. As a pastor, he set himself two goals. First, he wanted unbelievers to grieve over their fate and realize the necessity of God's grace. On the other hand, he wanted believers to rejoice in the assurance that they had received God's grace. His books are simple but exciting commentaries with many practical examples and applications. He explains the paradox that both good and bad events contribute to the benefit of believers. He spends a great deal of time explaining what it means to love God and be called by His will. In this book, Watson manages to answer one of the most plaguing theological questions of all time: Why do bad things happen to good people? This eBook includes the following 14 volumes by Thomas Watson: Body of Practical Divinity The Ten Commandments The Lord's Prayer The Beatitudes The Godly Man's Picture The Art of Divine Contentment A Treatise Concerning Meditation The Great Gain of Godliness The Doctrine of Repentance The Mischief of Sin A Divine Cordial The Christian Soldier The Christian's Charter The Duty of Self-Denial

Book Some Letters of Saint Bernard

Download or read Some Letters of Saint Bernard PDF, written by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on 1904 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This selection of S. Bernard’s letters has been made in the hope that it may find its way into the hands of many to whom the volumes of the greater collection are unknown, or are for one reason or another inaccessible. The letters of great and good men give us information about them which can be derived from no other source. “As the eyes are to the other bodily senses,” says the editor of S. Augustine’s correspondence, “so are the letters of illustrious men in numberless ways more wonderful than all their other works. In them, as in the mirror of the human eyes, appear the personal qualities, passions, virtues, and vices of the individual. Just as no one can better show himself to the life than in his letters, so nowhere can he be better known” than in them. This is true of the letters of every saint, as well as of every man of affairs; and the peculiar value and charm of such collections of letters is almost universally acknowledged. Aeterna Press
