Book Ancient and Medieval Greek Etymology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on Greek synchronic etymology offers a set of papers evidencing the cultural significance of etymological commitment in ancient and medieval literature. The four sections illustrate the variety of approaches of the same object, which for Greek writers was much more than a technical way of studying language. Contributions focus on the functions of etymology as they were intended by the authors according to their own aims. (1) “Philosophical issues” addresses the theory of etymology and its explanatory power, especially in Plato and in Neoplatonism. (2) “Linguistic issues” discusses various etymologizing techniques and the status of etymology, which was criticized and openly rejected by some authors. (3) “Poetical practices of etymology” investigates the ubiquitous presence of etymological reflections in learned poetry, whatever the genre, didactic, aetiological or epic. (4) “Etymology and word-plays” addresses the vexed question of the limit between a mere pun and a real etymological explanation, which is more than once difficult to establish. The wide range of genres and authors and the interplay between theoretical reflection and applied practice shows clearly the importance of etymology in Greek thought.

Book excerpt: While the world's major religions differ in their beliefs, they share common spiritual values. Although Christians and Muslims disagree about the divinity of Jesus, the New Testament and the Qur'an affirm a common set of spiritual virtues that are also found in Hinduism and Buddhism. For Christians, the fundamental spiritual virtues are most memorably stated in the Beatitudes that begin the Sermon on the Mount. Strangers on the Shore explores the virtues in the Beatitudes as they are expressed in the New Testament, the Muslim Qur'an, the Hindu Bhagavad Gita, and the writings and traditions of Buddhism.

Book excerpt: The peripatetic lifestyle is an adaptation that has been an integral part of developments within the socioeconomic and cultural networks that social scientists study. The ambiguous integration of peripatetics into these networks as well as the often negatively charged constructs - "Gypsies," "outsiders," or "marginal others" -- are imposed on peripatetics by dominant cultures. Peripatetics are situated at the fringes of their host societies. Contributors examine the place of peripatetic peoples in the everyday lives and diverse cognitive maps of client communities. Relying on Georg Simmel's construct of "The Stranger," the contributors to this volume suggest that peripatetic peoples are simultaneously outsiders and insiders, but most important, they are entrepreneurial middlemen traders par excellence. All told, the essays provoke vital reassessments of the anthropological focus on the role and status of "cultural brokers" and go-betweens in political, economic, and social interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1868 American explorer Charles Francis Hall interviewed several Inuit hunters who spoke of strangers travelling through their land. Hall immediately jumped to the conclusion that the hunters were talking about survivors of the Franklin expedition and set off for the Melville Peninsula, the location of many of the sightings, to collect further stories and evidence to support his supposition. His theory, however, was roundly dismissed by historians of his day, who concluded that the Inuit had been referring to other white explorers, despite significant discrepancies between the Inuit evidence and the records of other expeditions. In Strangers Among Us Woodman re-examines the Inuit tales in light of modern scholarship and concludes that Hall's initial conclusions are supported by Inuit remembrances, remembrances that do not correlate with other expeditions but are consistent with Franklin's.
