Pastor Denny Carr and his wife, Jan, have experienced the unspeakable: the death of their oldest child. It was through this tragic event that they discovered one profound truth: one can face, overcome, and move beyond all the pain agony, loneliness, heartbreak, hopelessness, desperation, and even death itself. Jesus Christ can move us from the darkness of despair to the light and comfort found in His presence. This true story shows that deep down, all of us want to believe and experience the supernatural. In our present-day culture, we are starving to find inner meaning, guidance, and purpose in life. This book was written as a tool that seeks to affirm what we are all searching for. Anyone who has struggled with these questions can relate to Clifton L. West III, a Baptist church deacon who shares his story of an extraordinary life lived by an ordinary man. He writes about his faith and journey through life, offering a message of hope and encouragement for anyone who has struggled with challenges of their own. Of Life and Time focuses on the ingredients for a life well lived–– affirmation, love and righteous and loving instruction––even as it shares details about West, who attended school in Topeka, Kansas, just one year after the Supreme Court case Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka that led to school desegregation. Clifton, a runner, was national champion in the mile run in 1968, led the University of California track and field team, and almost made the 1972 Olympic team. Through his own personal struggles––with the help of his savior, Jesus Christ––Clifton comes to the realization that unconditional love and relationships with others provide the key to good living, even as he realizes his looming mortality. Of Life and Time delivers his timely message of personal testimony, a resounding message of unrelenting hope and unconditional joy for those willing to receive it.

Book excerpt: With our lives firmly controlled by the steady pace of time, humans have yearned for ways to escape its constraints, and authors have responded with narratives about traveling far into the past or future, reversing the flow of time, or creating alternate universes. This book considers how imaginative works involving time travel reflect ongoing scientific concerns and examine the human condition. The scope of the volume is unusually wide, covering such topics as Dante, the major novels of the 19th century, and stories and films of the 1990s. The book concludes with a lengthy bibliography of short stories and novels, films and television programs, and nonfiction works that feature time travel or speculations about time.

Book excerpt: A virus is in circulation in sub-Saharan Africa that has the potential to become a pandemic wreaking havoc on healthcare systems and economies worldwide. Millions will die. The scientific community and governments work at speed to find a vaccine, but progress is slow. Research labs around the world turn their attention to this latest viral strain in an attempt to find a formula that can be manufactured in volume for global distribution. It’s a race against time. Dr Dan Thomas was a research scientist working in such a lab to find such a vaccine, but unlike his peers, he was not content to use his talent and intellect to better the world. He had witnessed friends fast-track their careers and accumulate wealth, and he was envious. He was highly intelligent, but a flawed individual addicted to hard drugs and alcohol which affected his judgement. Dan’s role in the lab was pivotal. He had responsibility for workflow, monitoring and managing the progress of the lab’s research. A chance encounter with a venture capitalist at a party gave him the idea that he could prosper from stealing the intellectual rights of his employer’s vaccine research, making him a wealthy man, only to encounter challenges he hadn’t anticipated. This tense and exciting story of one man’s quest for wealth and power reveals the lengths some are prepared to go to in an attempt to achieve their misguided ambitions. Lives are destroyed and people die.

Book Performance of Time Critical Embedded Systems under the Influence of Errors and Error Handling Protocols

Download or read Performance of Time Critical Embedded Systems under the Influence of Errors and Error Handling Protocols PDF, written by Philip Axer and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As for the entire embedded-systems domain, the complexity of safety-critical systems is growing rapidly. Additionally, the rate of errors in such devices also increases for instance due to silicon shrinking. Hence, error-free operation under in-specification operating conditions cannot be assumed for next-generation safety-critical devices. As a rule of thumb the key design parameters for such systems performance, price and reliability are almost always contradicting design goals. This work addresses the related design space, highlights the challenges and discusses the trade-offs. Of unique interest is the reliability under real-time aspects. Naturally, there are error-handling protocols, error-correcting codes, and modular redundancy available. However, the effect of errors always has an influence on system timing. Even if an error is handled and corrected, it remains unclear under which situations timing requirements are met. This leads to the absurd situation that a device such as an advanced driver assistance system produces correct data even under errors but fails to deliver service because hard deadlines are missed. We present the ASTEROID architecture as a next-generation high-performance, real-time platform which addresses reliability and thus safety aspects. ASTEROID differs from other MPSoC platforms in its cross-layer error handling approach. The hardware implements the bare minimum to support the operating system with support for redundant computing, allowing the software to flexibly schedule tasks for redundant or regular execution. This architecture was joint work between TU Braunschweig and TU Dresden. In this work, we present the hardware architecture and discuss the real-time performance under errors in a compositional way. Therefore, we consider errors in communication (be it on-chip as well as off-chip) and errors in the processing core itself. The scientific contributions are first to extend compositional performance analysis (CPA) also by covering error effects, second to cover end-to-end error protocols with CPA, third to provide execution models and analysis for redundant execution and finally to bound the likelihood of timing violations in communication and computation under a given error model.

Book excerpt: In a single volume that will be of service to philosophy students of all levels and to their teachers, this reader provides modern, accurate translations of the texts necessary for a careful study of most aspects of Aristotle's philosophy. In selecting the texts Professor J. L. Ackrill has drawn on his broad experience of teaching graduate classes, and his choice reflects issues of current philosophical interest as well as the perennial themes. Only recent translations which achieve a high level of accuracy have been chosen; the aim is to place the Greekless reader, as nearly as possible, in the position of a reader of Greek. As an aid to study, Professor Ackrill supplies a valuable guide to the key topics covered. The guide gives references to the works or passages contained in the reader, and indication of their interrelations, and current bibliography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain once said, “The two greatest days in your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out why.” But what happens when you know the why but can't figure out how to make it happen? It is this journey between the realization of your purpose and its actualization that Randall Worley calls process. Purpose, which answers why, can be realized in moment. However, process, which must answer how, is not actualized as quickly. In other words, “becoming an overnight success takes years.” Purpose has been a hot topic for several years, capturing the attention of those adrift in a culture of apathy and aimlessness. It is certainly a far more palatable subject in today’s culture of self-improvement than is process, because it seems to offer a free carpet ride from here to there. Your destiny, however, is not downloadable. The dream of your future is free, but the journey will demand a price. Yet it is in the sacrifice and effort of process that God will turn your purpose into a world-changing reality.
